    If I have groves that are damaged, dented in, scratched across the insert face etc. Does it matter? Is there a way to use a groove sharpener to repair putter grooves or some other tool?

    • @misteroneputt
      @misteroneputt День тому

      I would say the damage dented mangled grooves would have an impact because where the grooves are higher and lower that affects how much of the face contacts the ball. So things might wobble a little bit off-line. I would think you could straighten them out with a groove sharpener.

    The so-called plumb bob green reading involves the use of a straight line (usually a straight putter shaft) projected on to the line from ball to hole. The putter does not have to be plumb to find this line (as in deChambeau) and the putter head and taper are irrelevant (deChambeau holds his putter in both hands just above the head). If the putter has a straight shaft, it is straight no matter which way the head is turned.

    Here is what I found doing much the same thing. I practiced 6 foot putts under a string every day. The string is to get level consistency only and take any break out. I got to be making 50 or more in a row and I would go home. When I came back the next day, I would start out missing 6 to 8 out of 10 every time. I knew if I could figure out why this happens I would be a good putter. And I finally did figure it out. When practicing timing takes over. Hitting putt after putt with only a few seconds in between strokes caused the putter to be square to the target at impact due to timing alone. You make everything. But that does not hold up after 5 minutes or so. Then I found out that if I RELEASED (swing) the putter blade this does not happen. When you give up control of the putter it stays square all by itself. Ahhhh.... You were right Ben Crenshaw and later Tiger Woods. You have to get an ultra-light grip. a big flat topped grip, and give up control of the putter. Timing means nothing under that scenario. You are taking yourself out of the putt. Very little else is important. Some of these guys today even move all over the place as they stroke. It does not reflect down into the putter blade angle when it is already released.

  • @mesillahills
    @mesillahills 3 дні тому

    I love how in life, people who know absolutely nothing about putting make videos telling people how to do something they cannot do themselves. All top putters will tell you, "you have to GIVE UP CONTROL of the putter in order to get control of the putter". It is at the heart of the Ben Crenshaw's ultra-light grip and something every touring pro uses today.... THE RELEASE. The principle is that you take yourself out of the putt. A putter under it's own momentum has exactly ZERO propensity to twist. So top putters work on staying perpendicular to the tilted plane of the shaft and RELEASING the putter. The big flat topped Super Stoke type grip helps them do that. It's also why many pros throw away a putter with poor balance. Tiger's right hand only drill is a great way to learn a nice release as well.

    Great videos. Can you help me attain a honu putter. Preferable used cut new is also fine. My putting style is straight back and thru. Right to left bias. I use a claw grip with light pressure. Concerned more about speed control. 33 to 33.5 inches. I know I need to stand closer to the ball to ensure my eyes are over the ball, working on that with a putter mirror. Thanks for your videos and any help you can provide.

    Re: learning to trust your line at address. Have you done the exercise / made a video where you place 3 tees in a known straight line (20' span perhaps) and then address a ball at the first moving your eyes until your brain agrees with the line? Can do different distances. I hate when I get over the ball and feel like the line on the ball is pointed wrong. Happens more on side slopes.

    Will aluminum face with grooves be different than copper face with grooves

    • @misteroneputt
      @misteroneputt 4 дні тому

      I dont think so. The grooves simply soften the strike by applying less face to the ball...the ball doesnt compress into the grooves.

    Great tips. And you are so right about practicing with a purpose. I made a game for myself on the practice putting green, maybe it might help someone. It worked for me. We had a 9-hole practice green, but you could amend this to suit. Make it 9 holes total though. Here are the rules: Decide on the order of the 9 holes, and don't be too easy on yourself, so include some long, awkward, breaking putts. No three putts allowed. No putt finishing short - even by a 10th/inch - of the hole is allowed. No putt finishing further than 18 inches from the hole is allowed. You have to to take all short putts or tap ins, no gimmes. If you fail on any of the above 'rules', start again. And again! Carry the game on until you you complete the 9 holes in a maximum of 18 putts. This reduced my handicap by 5 shots, and I became a very good lag putter. Thanks for your channel, excellent stuff.. your advice and research is pure gold.!

    So: 1) Learn to roll ball straight up target line. Minimize rotating face off target line. 2) Alignment. Read putt. Select line relative to hole, then select intermediate target on line, 9-12" out on green. 3) Aim. Ensure that aim matches the alignment, the line chosen. Then execute #1 above. Stroke/roll ball straight up target line, over chosen target. Right?

    Why would I be hating on Roy. The game is difficult. It's even more difficult for me than it is for him. Heck at least he had a three footer to miss. They don't pay me to do that😂

    • @misteroneputt
      @misteroneputt 8 днів тому

      Exactly...so many people talking about how he choked and I suppose you could say that and be somewhat correct since he didn't make it under pressure. My point is more that he made 496 in a row from that distance before this and that is an amazing feat...so he probably had a mental lapse. Bottom line: If he misses a 3 footer then I shouldn't be shocked when I miss one. I fully expect his attitude is to be happy he played well enough to have that opportunity and then focus on the next event.

    The difference is, those 496 weren't to win the US Open. He flat out chocked. In contrast, when Phil chipped to within 3 feet during his last major win, he said he knew he was going to win at that point because of the way he practices 3 foot putts.

    I typically spot putt, like Nicklaus used to do. Let's just say it's a 5 footer that I want to hit straight. I hold my putter up in the middle of my eyeline and close my non dominant eye....I see a discoloration on the green that lines up straight to the hole from my ball and then line up to that...without a line on the ball...just looking at starting the ball over the mark I saw. However, I make some and miss some, I am now wondering if I still spot putted and put the club like you said, on my dominant side if that would give me a better "mark" than in the middle of my eyes? Still closing my non dominant eye, but finding the "spot" with the club off center on the dominant side.....or would the "spot" still be the same? Hopefully this made sense 😀

      That is a brilliant idea and I think it would work quite well. I always pick a spot for my target line with a thought like I want to roll right over that spot or just above the top edge of it or an inch below it or whatever sometimes the spot doesn’t always line up when it’s something I can visibly see on the green, but yes, using your dominant eye to lineup to a spot would certainly help spot putters with or without the line on the ball.

    You also have to be able to read the green. Line and speed both have to be correct to make the putt.
